Significance
Thaipusam is observed on the full moon day of the Tamil month Thai (Jan - Feb) to make offerings to Lord Muruga. Carrying Kavadi is considered the best offering.

 

Thaipusam Heritage Corner
Singapore's Thaipusam Festival is rich with history and origin .The organisers feel it is important that devotees and tourists be well informed of the developments the annual festival has gone through over the years and the religious significance of the various stages of preparing for the thanks giving. A heritage corner has been set up at the field opposite to Serangoon Plaza and an exhibition will be on from 7th to 8th February 2009. We encourage everyone to visit the Heritage Corner and benefit from the information and displays.

 

Cultural Concerts - 7th & 8th February 2009
Cultural concerts by well known artists from South India, Malaysia and Singapore will be held on 7th and 8th February 2009 evening at the field opposite to Serangoon Plaza.

Thaipusam Festival 2009

MILK POT/KAVADI RECEIPTS
Devotees are requested to obtain receipts Tor the following services from 9th January 2009 to 8th February 2009.

For Paalkudams (milk pots), numbered stickers (2 pcs) will be provided. Kindly place one on your Paalkudam and produce the other to identify and collect your respective Kudam after the PaaI(Milk)Abishegam at STT. Devotees may wish to avoid the rush period taking of midnight to 1 am for Paalkudams.
 
SPIKE/CHARIOT KAVADI RECEIPTS
Receipts for the following services will be sold from 30th January 2009 to 6th February 2009.

GUIDELINES FOR DEVOTEES
Devotees are kindly requested to observe the following guidelines:

1) Assemble your Kavadis at the designated area in SSPT.

2) Dismantle your Kavadis at the designated area in STT.

3) Spike / Chariot Kavadis will be tagged upon leaving SSPT. Kavadi bearers are to retain the tag on the Kavadis until they are removed by an official at STT. Kavadis without tags will not be allowed at STT.

4) Thaal Alagu (Spears) shall not exceed 300mm in length.

5) Please note that in compliance with the Police Permit, SSPT doors will be closed at 6 pm and STT doors will be closed at 11 pm on 8-2-09. All devotees are requested to adhere to the timings strictly.

6) Only traditional musical instruments such as Nathaswaram and Thavil will be allowed in SSPT and STT. As per Police regulation, there will be no instrumental music permitted along the procession route. All freelance musicians are required to register at SSPT on Thaipusam day.

7) Urumi Melam: The use of Urumi Melam is not in keeping with the traditions and practices of our Temples and as such we would appreciate if the Kavadi bearers refrain from using them.

Afternoon Spike Kavadi carriers will he requested to pay a security deposit of S100/-.    The deposit money will be refunded if the Kavadi carrier reaches STT before the stipulated time of 11.00pm on 8.2.2009 fixed by the Police authorities.    If the Kavadi carrier fails to arrive within this time, their deposit would be forfeited.

The closing date for issuing receipts for Spike / Chariot Kavadis will be 6.2.2009.   Requests for Receipts after the closing date will he considered and issued subject to availability at an additional late registration fee of $50/-.

SPECIAL SAHASRANAMA ARCHANAI
As in the previous years, Special Sahasranama Archanai will be performed for Sri Vinayagar and Sri Srinivasa Perumal on 7th February and 8th February 09, in conjunction with Thaipusam. All devotees, especially those fulfilling "Thaipusam" vows are encouraged to participate in this auspicious prayer. This prayer is being conducted for a successful journey from SSPT to STT by Devotees and their families to fulfil their vows.

Please register your name / Nakshathiram and obtain the $5/-receipt for the prayers from SSPT office.

 

HEAD SHAVING AT SRI THENDAYUTHAPANI TEMPLE
The following arrangements for Devotees to fulfil their "Head Shaving” vows will be made at the vicinity of Teochew Building. (next to STT).

SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS AT SSPT
Devotees could seek the following services (if available) at SSPT:-

(1) Nathaswaram/Thavil to perform for a fee before commencement of their Kavadi / Paalkudam processions. Kindly make your bookings at the temple office early.

(2) Free Volunteer Service (Subject to Availability)
To Pierce the "Spike" (Vel / Alagu) on participating devotees who are in need of such assistance.

(3) Kavadi Songs : For Kavadi bearers who need assistance with "Kavadi Chindhu" during the preparatory and upto the procession stage, groups who are competent in rendering Kavadi songs will be available to offer their services. Kavadi bearers can book the services of these groups when they obtain their Kavadi receipts at Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple.

(NB: For this service, please liaise with the SSPT office).

Tents  will be erected along Selegie Road for all Devotees / Visitors to sit and view the Kavadi processions conveniently.
